Many customers in the United States are familiar with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Star Rating program. You’ll see it on every new television, appliance, and air conditioning system for sale. It serves as a guideline for expected electricity and energy consumption throughout the product’s lifespan. However, in Europe, the Energy Star® logo is also becoming increasingly common on a wide range of equipment such as printers, computers, and more.
An important factor in determining the rating is the lubricant used in the moving parts of the equipment. Significant differences were observed in industrial machinery such as compressors, hydraulic systems, and gearboxes. Simply using a high-quality lubricant made a notable difference in energy consumption.
Several years ago, SWEPCO, in collaboration with the Department of Energy, underwent extensive testing, studies, and comparisons with major lubricant manufacturers to prove that the use of SWEPCO products can and will reduce energy consumption.
The test protocol included recording temperatures, energy use (electricity, fuel, and pressure), and load. The equipment was then cleaned and flushed, filled with SWEPCO lubricants, and the same data was recorded and compared. In all cases, SWEPCO lubricants were able to reduce energy usage and costs.

SWEPCO products not only extend the life of equipment and last longer themselves, but they also save on energy costs. Over a ten-year period (2008 to 2018), industrial electricity costs did not change much—the average in 2008 was $0.0633 per kilowatt-hour, and in 2018 it was $0.0693 per kilowatt-hour in the U.S. It may not seem like much, but even a 2% reduction in energy consumption for an industrial customer can translate into thousands of euros in a short time. And most users experience a significantly higher percentage of energy savings—often even in the double digits!
At the end of 2022, energy prices skyrocketed. While they have returned to more reasonable levels, expectations are that they may rise again this coming winter. By using SWEPCO’s exceptionally high-quality lubricants, machine components last longer, lubricant consumption is significantly reduced due to lower grease usage, longer oil change intervals, AND reduced energy consumption.
