Odfjell Well Services Coevorden: Casing division. Supplier of complete packages for the installation and removal of pipelines in oil and gas extraction internationally. Provides comprehensive maintenance for oil and gas wells, both onshore and offshore. The hydraulic/pneumatic tools used must meet high-quality standards and are exposed to the most extreme weather conditions.

Hydraulically driven tongs are one of the most critical components on all drilling rigs. They have a high torque and high-speed tools used for assembling and disassembling pipes. The gears/bearings of the tongs had been lubricated in the past with various products from different suppliers (EP2 greases). Regardless of what was used, when the tongs were returned for inspection, there was no grease left, and the wear on the gears/bearings was substantial. 20 out of 34 units had to be repaired at an average cost of €5,500 per unit.

In February 2009, Frank Kleijn suggested lubricating the gears/bearings with SWEPCO 105 High Impact Plus Grease, as this grease is highly resistant to extreme heavy loads, even in freshwater, saltwater, and brackish conditions. As a result, wear on the gears/bearings would visibly decrease, and the grease consumption would also reduce, as re-lubrication would be required less often and in smaller quantities.

• With SWEPCO 105 High Impact Plus Grease, the grease consumption has significantly decreased. The grease stays in place much better than with all previously tested greases. The consumption was reduced from 100 kg per month to 32 kg per month, a decrease of 68%.
• After inspection, the gears/bearings can be used immediately, as wear is almost completely eliminated, resulting in savings of €110,000 per rental cycle.
• Accumulation of grease in free spaces is no longer an issue, and the gears/bearings still have a nice grease layer.
• It is also cleaner around the tongs, as the grease is no longer easily forced out.
• Due to the results achieved during extensive testing, all units are now lubricated with SWEPCO 105, and McCoy (formerly Superior), the supplier of the tongs, has been instructed to only use SWEPCO 105 High Impact Plus Grease as factory lubrication.
• Thanks to SWEPCO 105, OWS’s tools are now even more reliable and less prone to damage.
