COMPANY
Custom Offroad designs and delivers solutions tailored to the customer’s needs. To make this possible, parts and/or accessories are custom-made, meaning each customer gets a unique product specifically for their vehicle. The projects Custom Offroad carries out are highly varied, including (winch) bumpers, sidebars, roll cages, and even complete suspension systems, tube chassis, and more. Almost anything is possible through consultation.
CHALLENGE
Mr. Ard van Meer, the owner of Custom Offroad, was looking for a better grease to protect constant velocity joints and wheel bearings that are exposed to contamination from watery mud and/or oil from the axle tube when the seal leaks. He was also searching for a higher-quality oil for power steering.
SOLUTION
Since 2017, they have been testing with SWEPCO 105 High Impact Plus Grease NLGI #2 and SWEPCO 715 Power-Steering-Hydraulic-Oil.
RESULTS
- At the American manufacturer of reinforced constant velocity joints, Mr. Ard van Meer inquired about the grease they use as standard in their joints. It turned out that SWEPCO 105 High Impact Plus Grease is an even better and higher-quality grease than what they use to fill new constant velocity joints. SWEPCO 105 High Impact Plus Grease is a strong and long-lasting grease, which means it can withstand higher loads without being displaced. It is also not diluted by contamination from watery mud or differential oil, ensuring the constant velocity joints remain properly lubricated for a longer time. As a result, they wear much slower and are less likely to break. This leads to less damage during events and 4×4 races, meaning no point loss and also lower repair costs in the long run.
- For the full hydro steering systems they sell or build, they exclusively use SWEPCO 715 Power Steering Hydraulic Oil. The American manufacturer of these full hydro steering systems emphasizes that non-synthetic steering oils or ATF oils suitable for power steering systems are not suitable. A high-quality fully synthetic power steering oil must be used. SWEPCO 715 was listed as one of the two recommended oils. Since Custom Offroad began using SWEPCO 715, they have not encountered any issues with the various hydraulic steering system components.
REMARKS
“In the tough off-road conditions during various competitions, the drivetrain components are often exposed to water, mud, sand, high loads from large tires and high engine power, peak loads, etc. It is essential that the grease does not mix or wash away and that it is not displaced by the pressure of metal-on-metal contact, ensuring proper lubrication of the constant velocity joints, bearings, and U-joints. This results in fewer breakdowns during competitions with a higher chance of winning. Maintenance between races is also simpler, faster, and cheaper because fewer parts need to be checked or replaced. A simple visual inspection and re-greasing is sufficient. Wear is significantly reduced.” – Mr. Ard van Meer, Owner.
Southwestern Petroleum Corporation thanks Custom Offroad in Hapert, a SWEPCO relationship since 2017, and Service Representative Frank Kleijn for this information, which is based on actual customer experiences.
Results in other applications may vary. Always consult OEM specifications for the correct lubricant selection.
